Marcus Bohm - owner of 321takeoff school and surfer himself about Dominican Republic
What to say, I came here in summer of 1990.
Came for the wind and stayed for the waves, a beautiful country and special people.
Cabarete town was rediscovered in 80s by french canadian windsurfers. I say rediscovered as i believe for sure the tainos must had liked the fresh water lagoon, the caves and protected bay with waves outside long time ago.
When i arrived there was already 5 or 6 windsurfing centers and still felt like a chill fishing town with windsurfer coming from all over the world. Since first Windsurf Cup was held, Cabarete became a well-known spot in the water sport world.
In 1991 i founded a project called "Cabarete Kids team" to help and support 6 local kids to go to school and have windsurf gear. In 1997 i meet French kite boarder Christopher Tasty and Franz Olry and got involved into Kiteboarding.
1999 i got involved in competing in kiteboarding and brought the 1st Kite world cup to town in 2000. From 2001 on i worked for Eurosport and though a production company established the 1st kiteboarding world championshiptour. In 2003 the idea came up to organize the Master of the Ocean, a surf , windsurf and kiteboard competiton held yearly since then in Cabarete.
